![]() They may be from Central or South America, but they are Americans, and we need to recognize that pain travels just like pollution. If you think of yourself as an American, and I do, then this is being done in our name.Īnd the truth is, as someone once pointed out to me, these kids are Americans too. We need to feel the pain because we are causing this. It is too easy to feel overwhelmed by waves of human-made pain and horror. If we have to look away to deal with the feelings it brings up, we know it’s not ok.Īnd yes, there are too many things in our world that make us feel this way. When we see what is happening, our bodies feel it. We don’t need research or mental health professionals to prove this. They are not ok, and this is something that our country is doing. It is 4 am, and I should be sleeping, or maybe not. We are doing this, and we know it is wrong. We are breaking their hearts and ours at the same time. Cold, tired, hungry, scared children without loving arms to hold and rock them. Perhaps they feel caged, like animals or criminals, although they too deserve better. They are surrounded by chain-link fences. We are warehousing them in places where there aren’t enough loving adults to help them feel safe. Like many of you, I am taking in the news, and I am overwhelmed that we are separating children from their families. It’s 4 am, and I should be sleeping, but I’m not.
